To me, gardening and agriculture are not ‘leisure’ pursuits: while they can be pleasurable and fulfilling, they are fundamentally about manipulating the environment to ensure survival (of the individual, the family, the species, the biome, the economically-valuable plant genetics, whatever); these are basic skills for survival.
