A perfect fall ride through the foothills.
I learned a lot tearing this bike down and building it back up again, but the frame has always been a little too big for me. It was dropped off at Good Life today so that someone else can get more use out of it than I do now. Hopefully nobody just yanks that seat though.

On our way back from Victoria we stopped by my parents in Red Deer for a quick visit before heading home. Slug had been running really well (slowly, but well) for us the whole time. Getting it inspected before purchasing it, the folks at Tony’s had thought it was in pretty good shape other than the usual things.

I still can’t come to terms with Mac Git clients. GitX, so far my favorite, has a minimal, native UI but doesn’t support creating stashes. Tower and SourceTree are both more full-featured but have odd toolbar icons and tabs. Every time I need to do something like an interactive rebase I need to hop into a terminal anyways, so I decided to try tig (brew install tig) again. I like the visual branch display, and it’s easy to quickly pull up diffs. I’m running it in a tmux pane so I have one to run commands, but you can also only run it when you need to. Using git on the command line also keeps your hands on the keyboard, and lets you use aliases or access GitHub issues with ghi, etc.

I’ve been feeling a need to be more politically active for a long time, beyond just absorbing news and having opinions. I wanted a way to make it easier for everyone to follow how their elected officials are voting as soon as it happens. The Parliament makes quite a bit of information freely available, but it’s not always available in the best way. I wanted to change that.

I put in some time last night working on my amplifier project again after I had received all of the remaining ICs and parts I need for the electronics late last year. One of the decisions I made was to have multiple inputs – a default for an Apple TV (or insert media box) and auxiliary (via minijack and Bluetooth) - and therefore a method of switching between the two. I don’t want to have any physical interaction for input switching when the use case is so clear cut. The default input is always the chosen input unless you want to play music from a phone or iPod (through minijack or BT) at which point it will switch automatically by detecting the signal. It should be (and is) smart enough to do this on its own. There is even a delay before switching back to the default input to accommodate song transitions. I was able to modify Rod Elliot’s Signal Detection Circuit, originally designed to toggle power to a subwoofer, to run on a 5V supply by using a LM358N dual op-amp and 2N3904 transistor and changing some of the resistor and cap values. I especially like this circuit because it allows the logic to be contained within a few chips in the analog section and doesn’t need to involve the Arduino or any of the digital components. It toggles the output high when a signal is detected and this goes to a diode OR gate (to be combined with an “active stream” signal from the BT board) and on to a Maxim MAX4616. The Maxim chip is a 4xSPST analog switch that works perfect for this application (toggling between two inputs) because 2 of the switches are normally open and the others normally closed. Also, it’s available in a DIP package that makes it easy to prototype, something that’s hard to find for this type of IC. Next: Solder the BT breakout board, hook it up to the summing op-amp and add it into the mix (so to speak) Solder all of the LEDs and the two drivers to some stripboard to prototype Troubleshoot until my eyes cave in

Had a wonderful weekend out at my girlfriend’s cabin with her and her dad. Reading, eating, drinking and lots of time spent outside. The garden got weeded, we went fishing (Well, we put hooks in the water. Nothing came out with them) and today we went canoeing for a few hours. It was my first time canoeing and it’s one of the most relaxing ways to spend your day. Next time I’m bringing sunscreen.

I’m looking at getting some new pedals for my bike. I currently have some tiny SPD pedals with no platform which are definitely not the best when I’m always riding around in sneakers. These look like the best option I’ve seen so far, a large platform on one side and SPD binding on the other.

I finished wiring up the analog audio side of things a few days ago. Now a Burr Brown OPA2134 opamp at unity-gain buffers the incoming audio signal and a PGA2311 provides volume control. I added a Mean Well +/- 5V PSU to power it all and provide the negative rail for the audio chips. I had a huge breakthrough in reliability when I realized that I need to run separate MOSI lines for each chip’s SPI bus. Often you’ll see a data sheet talk about daisy chaining chips and sharing MOSI lines, but this is only for the same kind of chip. The capacitive sensor reports perfect values now. I rewrote the code from scratch to troubleshoot when the sensor was being unreliable and learned some more about how the chips are actually communicating. Wrapping my head around the LEDControl library was a big help. I found a neat function called fscale that is similar to map, but it accepts floating point variables and can curve the result. I used it to manipulate the volume level to be more linear and predictable as the value of the sensor changes. I adapted the volume control code from linux-works on the Arduino forums to use shiftOut instead of the custom function he had written: void PGA_set_volume(byte value) { byte shifted_val = (value << 1); digitalWrite(PGA_CS_PIN, LOW); // assert CS shiftOut(PGA_SDI_PIN, PGA_SCLK_PIN, MSBFIRST, shifted_val); // right value shiftOut(PGA_SDI_PIN, PGA_SCLK_PIN, MSBFIRST, shifted_val); // left value digitalWrite(PGA_CS_PIN, HIGH); // deassert CS } A cadmium sulphide LDR now provides ambient light values to adjust the brightness of the LEDs dynamically in software. The next step is to tie in the 12V PSU with a relay to power an amplifier stage, and I’m considering just purchasing a Tripath-based board. I’ve backed myself into a bit of a corner by purchasing a 12V supply instead of something higher, and I don’t want to try building and soldering a board based on the complex Tripath chips when they’re so inexpensive to purchase pre-assembled. The really hard part that’s coming up will be building the enclosure to meet the expectations I’ve set for it.

I had no idea what was involved in making a hat like this. There are so many tools and machines specific to the task. My favorite parts: The tall, narrow wooden cart wheeling towards the camera. The pillow weight that was set on top of the black hat. (via Put This On)

Just when I was planning to assemble the QT1106 breakout board I received from Rachel’s Electronics in Brooklyn I got my SparkFun shipment with the parts for the LED section of my (secret) project this morning. Even better! I bought a Maxim MAX7219 and some super bright white LEDs to power the display of my project, and the capacitive strip and some buttons will be the input. The LEDControl and QT1106 (.zip) Arduino libraries are fairly straightforward to use, and after a little bit of banging my head against the wall wiring it came together nicely. The results with the linear sensor that was provided with the breakout board is a little bit jumpy, even after playing around with the settings. I will have to build a longer one anyways, so in addition to putting some work into more robust code I’ll see if there’s anything to improve in the sensor. Now I’m going to need to order a Burr-Brown PGA2311 and dive into power supplies and analog/digital ground planes for the second and more difficult part of the project.

I got my hands dirty last night and put in some work on my bike. I changed the chain and went from a 40t to 50t chainring. The next bit of work that I want to do at some point is paint the frame. Easter weekend was a really great time to take out the bike for the first time and explore downtown again.

New (well, used factory second) Filson bag from eBay. It’s the Padded Computer Bag in green, which’ll match my Pullman I got last fall. It’s a bit bigger than I expected, partly because it packs out a lot, but it’s still manageable enough for daily use. It easily holds a computer, iPad, water bottle, books, etc., etc. and will make a great carry-on bag for trips.

I’m waiting for some more parts to build my bike computer so I figured I should play around with the parts I got with my Arduino. Here I used a potentiometer to control some LEDs. The output from the pot is connected to an analog pin, and each LED is hooked up to a digital pin. Code: int sensorPin = A0; // select the input pin for the potentiometer int sensorValue = 0; // variable to store the value coming from the sensor int mappedValue = 0; void setup() { // declare the LED pins as OUTPUTs: pinMode(2, OUTPUT); pinMode(3, OUTPUT); pinMode(4, OUTPUT); pinMode(5, OUTPUT); Serial.begin(9600); //for testing } void loop() { // read the value from the sensor: sensorValue = analogRead(sensorPin); // map the sensor range (0-1023) to the number of LEDs (4, plus one for off) mappedValue = map(sensorValue, 0, 1023, 0, 4); // for testing Serial.println(sensorValue); Serial.println(mapped); // loop through all of the pins for(int i = 0; i <= 4; i++){ // if a pin is within the mapped sensor value, turn it on if(i < mappedValue){ // +2 because pins 0 and 1 are for serial I/O digitalWrite(i+2, HIGH); // if a pin is outside sensor value, turn it off } else { digitalWrite(i+2, LOW); } } }

I’m finally starting to try out some things on my Arduino after getting back to Edmonton. I want to make a bike computer for when I’m riding on my stationary trainer. Normally I would use my iPhone and Kinetic, but that doesn’t work when you’re not actually moving. I ordered some Hall effect sensors to sense a magnet attached to the rear wheel and figure out speed and distance “travelled”. Hall effect sensors suck, by which I mean I’m too inexperienced to figure out how to make it work effectively. So now I ordered some reed switches and am waiting on those. They require less components than the Hall sensor anyways (the jerks).

Have you ever had to show someone how to switch the TV from the cable box to the DVD player? It’s a heart-wrenching reminder that for all of the electronic magic in our homes, nobody can make it easy to switch from watching TV to a movie. For some reason the remotes, cables and all those seemingly smart boxes under the TV are still really, really dumb. In the last ten years there have been two kinds of attempts to change this situation that has arisen. The first is the development of the “one box” model. This is the Boxee, Apple TV, HTPC, etc. that strive to replace all of the many single-function boxes currently connected to your television. They largely pull content from online sources and aim to provide enough new features, like social integration and timeshifting, that you don’t notice that they are missing your live local news or the Food Network. Because there is only one box providing content, there is only one remote control and a unified interface to learn. From my own observations, most people have this one box still in addition to some other sources. I really want to believe that this is the way things will go: just one box with one cable that runs to, or is integrated into, your TV. The second method is one that leaves all of the remotes and cables and user manuals that are under your TV and tries to simplify the cacophony.  Peel is that kind of device. You’ll get better access to live content than a “one box”, especially sports and local content (although MLB and the NBA are offering live streaming to devices already), and you’re not throwing away the boxes that you already own. It also provides the control, social integration and ease of use that a single box might through it’s unique interface. One can only hope that this cause set-top box manufacturers to forgo the standard grid design for something new. The fact that Peel uses iOS devices instead of a dedicated remote is an almost obvious choice at this point. What’s been holding back Logitech for so long? I love the design of the Peel Fruit, what they have named their WiFi-IR bridge. It’s something you’ll leave on the coffee table and people will ask about it, as opposed to the traditional tiny-black-box bridges or rat’s nest of IR cables that get tucked inside something. Other iOS-based universal remotes rely on some sort of IR transmitter that attaches to the device itself, and some are just an extension to a pricey multi-zone system. Peel assumes you won’t want to add any bulk to your iOS device that you carry around with you while, still providing enough power to control a single-room system. I feel like Peel is more fully thought through in a way that other products in its category haven’t been, and it’s certainly an impressive demo video. It takes advantage of a connected remote device that some customers will already own. For people who have a few devices and are juggling remotes, Peel is a universal remote that is more fitting with the present time.

I just got back yesterday afternoon from a long weekend at Monique’s cabin. It was really relaxing, no other sounds but animals and the occasional far-off snowmobile. A Spine TV interview with my favorite illustrator mcbess.
I’ve updated my homepage with an updated version of Juke, my mixtape player. I did some thinking about the interface for listening to mixtapes online and realized that the original design I came up with was too much like any other media player on the web. I am still happy with some of the ideas like the timeline markers and Last.fm integration but sometimes you need to reevaluate why you’re making something. So I pulled out a lot of the features and drew up the interface for it. I also learned how to properly use the SoundManager library, so if anything it should be a bit more stable and compatible with different browsers. Try it out!

Juke (also the name of my mixtapes) is the jQuery plugin that I’ve been working on for the past few weeks. Mostly a proof of concept and learning exercise, it’ll let people listen to your mixes while it flips through the album art for each track and gives them markers throughout. It also ties in to Last.fm! I think it’s kind of snazzy and I’ll be adding a few more features soon, so check out the demo.

Jed’s Other Poem (Beautiful Ground) (by Stewdio) I really like this song, and the video is great too. I kind of wish the camera didn’t zoom out at the end, I feel like seeing this come from some empty, boring, lifeless desk takes away from the lyrics. Up until then it seems like it could very well be the computer speaking these words to you.

Newest member of the family. I had been looking for something more compact and light than my AE-1 to carry around all the time, like maybe a Canonet. Then I saw this little guy. He was $5 at the flea market and in impeccable condition from looking at him. The meter works and adjusts the aperture properly, so we’ll have to put a roll through and see how he does.

The speed of an electron can approach, but never reach, the speed of light in a vacuum, c. However, when relativistic electrons—that is, electrons moving at a speed close to c—are injected into a dielectric medium such as water, where the local speed of light is significantly less than c, the electrons temporarily travel faster than light in the medium. As they interact with the medium, they generate a faint light called Cherenkov radiation.
I didn’t take this seriously when I first read it (about a month ago when it was first written), but I’ve been eating at least one piece of fruit per day for the last two weeks or so. Snacks now consist of an apple or banana or maybe some cashews. The trick is buying fruit instead of cookies and not-really-that-healthy granola bars, which sounds ridiculous but is really all it takes. I still need to cut out all the mall food at work though.

So I guess I’m on a bit of a funky big beat kick. When I was in San Francisco earlier this year I ran across Tweekin’ Records and picked up a couple of Freddy Fresh 7" records from earlier this decade at the height of big beat. I hadn’t had a chance to listen to them again until now and they’ve got me looking for more music like this. I had no idea that he was this popular or prolific. The records I had gotten have some real feel-good funky vibes and some wicked 303 basslines in them as well. He also runs Howlin’ Records, among other labels, which goes further into the different breakbeat genres. Definitely worth checking out.

ltwp:
It’s looked like this for more or less the past year. The menu bar icons are Dropbox and battery/UPS status. I know there’s people who will cringe at those folders on the desktop, but they’re there because they’re easy to get to. Dropbox holds current projects for easy web access and backup with versioning. The ‘Stuff’ folder holds all of my inspiration images for easy drag and drop from Safari/NetNewsWire. The 'Temp Music’ folder is relatively new and is a result of a bunk iTunes Library database and months old Time Machine backup. I took my iTunes Music folder and threw it on the desktop, and I’m only pulling out the music I want to listen to. It’s the same strategy that Marco suggested for getting rid of physical possessions, and so far I’ve gone from 200GB to 20GB of music. It’s sooo much easier than it would have been to crawl through my old library and delete things.

How badass would your kid be on this Mad Max Jr. mode of transportation?
A less than serious post. I heard this song in the Gaurdian mix (which is otherwise a decent dubstep mix) from ISO50, the lyrics are just so ridiculous I couldn’t help google it. The video was a nice surprise result, this is going to play on repeat just so I can pick out every ridiculous line. “I’m a badman, you’re a penis. You’re whole crew stinks like feces.” This would be perfect for Snacks and Shit if they took UK grime submissions.
